What is Foam Filling?

Foam filling refers to the introduction of a lightweight urethane foam into a rubber tire. Usually by drilling a hole and slipping a tube into the tire and then injecting an amount of liquid that when foamed, will fill the tire completely. Barthold Tire's foam is a lightweight foam that is sturdy and durable. The foam maintains the flexibility, shock absorption, and easy movement of a pneumatic tire but won’t deflate even if punctured.

Flat-free tires are useful for vehicles that are in environments where there is a high likelihood of tire puncturings, such as a construction site that may have nails or screws, or for anyone who simply doesn’t want to have to worry about refilling a pneumatic tire.

How Does the Foam Filling Process Work? First, a hole is drilled into the tire to allow venting of air. Liquid foam fill is pumped into the mounted tire/wheel assembly through the valve stem. Air is displaced with foam fill. When the foam begins to come out of the hole in the tire, the vent hole is plugged. Foam is continued to pump in until the specified pressure is reached. Foam mixture then cures for 24 to 48 hours into a synthetic rubber-like core.

The tire is now flat proofed.
